This is one of the coolest things I’ve accidently made. I’ve been doing 2-4 color lo-fi remixes for awhile, but none of them has been as successful as this one. It takes one of Jamie Beck’s ‘cinemagrpahs’ and parses through its 24 well edited frames of animation in a manner that deconstructs Beck’s process. She wants to create a hierarchy within the images that use the GIF format: there are silly, flashing, glittered, and dithered ‘GIFs’, and then there are the brilliant, smooth, and wholesome ‘cinemagraphs’ which aren’t meant to be utilized in an online space as much as they are meant to be consumed via the internet (notice the 1.0 ideology vs. 2.0 ideology). But the real difference between the two is purely semantic, and this remix shows that her .gifs are still just frames pulled from videos with some high-tech gloss thrown over the top of them. When you take the bells and whistles off the images, you finally get some interesting animation, which is where the art of the .gif actually lies.
